DS | Shippin' Out Mar. 28-Apr. 3: DSi XL, Modern Warfare 2 DLC

Nintendo launches up-sized $190 update to popular portable line alongside WarioWare DIY; five-map add-on to Infinity Ward's top-selling shooter assaults 360 for $15.

Last Monday, Nintendo stunned the industry by announcing the 3DS, a "successor" to its 125-million-unit selling DS series that features 3D gaming capabilities without the need for specially designed glasses. With reports indicating the 3DS may arrive as soon as this year, Nintendo of course still needs to get the DS' fourth hardware iteration out the door.

Available starting today for $189.99, the DSi XL sports 4.2 inch dual screens, up from the DSi's 3.25 inch screens. Nintendo claims that the XL's battery life clocks in at four to five hours on maximum brightness and 13 to 17 hours on lowest brightness, on par with the DS Lite. The supersized handheld will also come preinstalled with several games and applications, including Photo Clock, Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, and Brain Age Express: Math. Notably, DSiWare games are not transferable to another handheld, meaning they would have to be repurchased on the new DSi XL.

Accompanying the release of the DSi XL will be WarioWare DIY, an extension of Nintendo's zany line of chaotic minigame compilations that includes 90 bite-sized games. As its name implies, DIY lets gamers take these experiences one step further by creating their own minigames either by using premade graphics and sound samples or by starting completely from scratch.

WarioWare DIY Showcase for WiiWare doesn't include game-making tools, but players can download minigames crafted in the DS edition. It also includes 70 exclusive minigames for players to work through.

The end-of-the-fiscal year doldrums dominate the remainder of the week. However, Activision will be livening things up a bit with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Stimulus Package. Modern Warfare 2's first map pack arrives this week for the Xbox 360 for 1,200 Microsoft points ($15), $5 more than the popular map packs released last year for Call of Duty: World at War. Infinity Ward has into the pack three new maps as well as the Crash and Overgrown maps seen in the original Modern Warfare.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later in the week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.
