PlayStation 3 | Virgin press conference--begins 5:30 p.m. PDT Monday, June 14
E3 2010: Billionaire Sir Richard Branson gathers press to share details about his ubiquitous brand's return to the games space.
LOS ANGELES--In the 1980s and 1990s, Virgin Interactive was a household name for gamers. Until it was sold off in pieces in 1999, the offshoot of billionaire Sir Richard Branson's multimedia empire published dozens of games for a variety of systems, ranging from the Nintendo SNES to Sony's original PlayStation.
In early 2007, Branson announced that Virgin Games would return with an all-new online platform. Partnering with Game Domain International, the service was to be an "iTunes for games" and offer titles for download. However, that project, called A World of My Own, currently remains in beta, with Virgin Games currently offering only online gambling titles.
That may soon change. Last month, reports surfaced that Branson would hold a press conference at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. It is expected he will announce a new service in partnership with leading publishers that will offer downloadable multiplayer games on Xbox Live as PlayStation Network as well as for the PC.
Further rumors peg Virgin's new service as being a competitive online league in which gamers can put their money where their headset is and bet on online competition. A detailed investigative report on Maxconsole said the service would be "challenge-based" and be run by run by Worldgaming.com, which already lets Xbox 360 and PlayStation players compete for cash.
One thing is certain: Something is launching soon, as the URL Virgingaming.com is currently running a countdown clock which expires tomorrow.
