Japanese publisher files USPTO application to trademark name for "computer game software" in advance of TGS 2009.

Between self-induced countdown timers and sleuthed-out trademark filings, gamers typically have a significant heads-up of what's on Square Enix's product road map. Today, that early warning comes from the latter category, as information-sleuthing site superannuation has unearthed a new filing within the United States Patent and Trademark Office's online database for "Season of Mystery."

Square Enix's trademark application offers little information as to the nature of Season of Mystery. As with other game-industry related filings, the application covers "computer game software; video game software; sound recordings in the form of optical discs, magnetic discs, and semiconductor ROMs featuring music and fictional stories," as well as a host of other one-off products, such as mouse pads and ringtones.

The Japanese publisher had not returned requests for comment on the trademark application as of press time. However, an official reveal for the title could be just around the corner, as tomorrow marks the official start of the 2009 Tokyo Game Show. This year's event, which features a keynote address from Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai later tonight, runs September 24-27, with the first two days devoted to business professionals and the back half open to the public.
