PC | Battlefield Heroes recruits 2 million

EA DICE's PC-based free-to-play, microtransaction supported online shooter hits double-platinum milestone, free update with new map coming Sept. 30.

EA DICE launched two new installments in its acclaimed Battlefield franchise in as many months over the summer, and thus far, both have proven to be successful campaigns. In mid-July, EA announced that its PC-based multiplayer-only shooter Battlefield Heroes has secured 1 million registered users. A week later, DICE's Battlefield 1943 surpassed 600,000 downloads across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game, a figure which grew to 1 million by August.

Today, the publisher revealed the latest milestone for Battlefield Heroes, saying that its free-to-play, microtransaction-supported online shooter has logged more than 2 million registered players since launching on June 25. To honor the milestone, EA said that it will release a free update to the game, titled Heroes of the Fall, on September 30.

Headlining the update will be a new map, and EA is currently soliciting players' help to name the arena through its official Web site. The map will cater to infantry-oriented action, as it sees players crawling through a village made convoluted by an abundance of intersecting canals.

Ben Cousins, general manager of DICE's Battlefield Heroes team, went into further depth on what gamers can expect from the update, saying, "Along with this new map, Heroes of the Fall includes a slew of changes including upgrades of the Gunner class and improvements to the friends system. We've also added a brand new ranking system for the game--players can earn cool new titles for their heroes as they play."
