DS | PEGI launches ratings app

New iPhone, iPad app aimed at parents launches to boost consumer awareness of pan-European ratings.

An application for Apple's mobile devices that provides detailed rating information was launched in the UK today. The app is aimed at parents looking to get guidance on the games that their children are playing, according to the UK Electronic and Leisure Software Publishers' Association (ELSPA), the umbrella group representing UK games publishers.

The application, which is available for free, works on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and the iPad. It provides access to the data associated with all 14,000 games that have been rated by the Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) service. After the passing of the Digital Economy Act in April, PEGI is the UK's de facto standard for game ratings, supplanting the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) as the statutory ratings system. The act comes into force on June 12, at which point it will be illegal for retailers to sell 12+, 16+, or 18+ PEGI-rated games to anyone under the specified age. Currently, this only applies to games rated by the BBFC.

Unlike PEGI's Web site search, which is limited to those 18 and over, the application is available for anyone to download and use. It contains information on the age ratings for all the games in PEGI's database, as well as information on why that rating was awarded. It also features consumer advice and details of the games' publishers and platforms.

PEGI replaced the BBFC as the statutory rating system for games after a long and sometimes bad-tempered battle following the publication of the Byron Report in 2008, which recommended that the BBFC take on more ratings. Publishers--both individually and through ELSPA--hit out at this plan and eventually prevailed, with the 2009 Digital Britain Report confirming the plan that eventually made its way into the Digital Economy Act.
