Xbox 360 | Mega Man 10 spreads onto XBLA, PSN

Xbox 360 | Mega Man 10 spreads onto XBLA, PSN

Capcom's latest retro action platformer headed to Microsoft's, Sony's downloadable catalogs as well as WiiWare in March; new trailer inside.

Capcom introduced Mega Man 10 via Nintendo Power magazine earlier this month, and the move may have given some the impression that the blue bomber's latest action platformer would be a Wii exclusive. However, Capcom confirmed today that Mega Man 10 will see release on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network in addition to WiiWare in March 2010.

Directed by original Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, Mega Man 10 continues in the vein established with last year's well-regarded Mega Man 9, as it once again sees the robotic warrior donning his retro armor and weapons for 2D platforming action. Mega Man 10's throwback theme extends to gameplay design as well, as the blue bomber blasts and leaps through eight stages to confront and absorb the powers of themed boss characters.

As for the story, Mega Man 10 is set in the year 20XX, when an outbreak of Roboenza has infected the world's mechanical constructs. The robot flu causes once servile machines to turn rabid, wreaking carnage amidst the city, and Mega Man is called upon to mop up his malfunctioning brethren.

In addition to Mega Man, gamers will be able to play through Capcom's latest action platformer as Proto Man. Nintendo Power previously reported that gamers can choose to play as one more, as-yet-unspecified character. Mega Man 10 also introduces the lower-difficulty Easy Mode as well as Mega Man Challenges, which serves as a training ground.

Along with confirming the game's Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release, Capcom also released Mega Man 10's first trailer, found below.

PlayStation 3 | PS Home gets Sodium One, tank shooter

PlayStation 3 | PS Home gets Sodium One, tank shooter

New sci-fi area of online social environment lets players blast through 50 levels of microtransaction-driven, customizable arcade-style action.

Sony Computer Entertainment America today gave gamers another reason to check out Home, as the publisher today added a new wing to its PlayStation 3 social gaming space. The latest addition to Home is Sodium One, a sci-fi world players can access through a teleporter in the Home central plaza area.

Once in the world of Sodium (described by Sony as "a vast salt plain"), players can interact with an AI guide named Vickie that doles out objectives to complete, or take part in an arcade-style tank game called "Salt Shooter." The game includes 50 levels, with the first five playable for free. After that, extra levels and items for the game can be purchased for a variety of prices, ranging from $0.99 to $4.99. While Salt Shooter supports multiplayer action and features a leaderboard, it is playable alone as well.

Sodium One also lets users play minigames and take part in more standard Home social interactions, from customizing their avatars with themed attire to serving drinks as a virtual bartender in the Sodium Hub. The Sodium game space was developed by Outso, virtual environment designers who have previously constructed Home spaces for Warhawk, Uncharted 2, and Infamous.

Xbox 360 | PSP Digital Comics store goes live

Xbox 360 | PSP Digital Comics store goes live

Hundreds of Marvel, Disney, and IDW comics from Spider-Man to Star Trek hit PlayStation Network; most issues cost $1.99.

The PSP already plays games and movies, but Sony has added something a little more static to its repertoire of entertainment media. The company today launched its PlayStation Network Digital Comics service, allowing PSP owners in the US to download hundreds of issues on their handheld gaming hardware.

The launch lineup of comics includes "approximately 550" issues pulled from companies like Marvel, Disney, and IDW Publishing, with more to be added every week. The titles included range from Archie & Friends to Zombies vs. Robots, with plenty of Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America, Star Trek, and Transformers in between. Most titles will be available for $1.99 an issue, but "select comics" will sell for $0.99 or $2.99, and a handful of free sample comics will also be available.

Users will be able to flip through purchased comics using the Digital Comics Reader application, which will allow them to zoom in and move around pages, or skip around frame by frame. Gamers will need to have PSP firmware update 6.20 or later in order to use the Digital Comics Reader.

A full list of available titles (though not specific issues) is available on Sony's official PlayStation Blog.

PlayStation 3 | Transformers wage War for Cybertron in 2010

PlayStation 3 | Transformers wage War for Cybertron in 2010

Activision and High Moon Studios' prequel story ventures to metallic planet to fight in robot civil war on 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PC next year.

In phoning in (literally) its 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference, Activision Blizzard announced new installments in a slew of franchises for 2010. While James Bond, Spider-Man, and Tony Hawk drew most of the attention at the time, the publisher also tipped its hand on a new Transformers game.

Today, Activision officially announced Transformers: War for Cybertron, saying the game will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, DS, and PC in 2010. The publisher's High Moon Studios has been tasked with development duties. The studio is best known for 2008's well-regarded Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy, as well as the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 title Darkwatch from 2005.

Activision is billing its latest Transformers game as an origins story and sees gamers journeying to the planet Cybertron as the Autobots and Decepticons engage in a gripping civil war. As the game is set prior to the war spreading to Earth, gamers will also see the robots transforming into their original Cybertronian forms. A teaser trailer for the game below shows an Optimus Prime that leans closer to aesthetic of the original cartoon and toy line than the recent films.

War for Cybertron will feature two original story arcs. The first sees gamers picking up with the heroic Autobots, who are severely outgunned in their effort to save the planet. The second campaign indulges gamers' destructive side as the megalomaniacal Decepticons. In addition to single-player action, War for Cybertron features online co-op play, as well as head-to-head multiplayer battling.

PC | Game theft nearly quadruples since 2007

PC | Game theft nearly quadruples since 2007

FBI statistics show easily pawned consoles, handhelds prove popular targets for thieves, with more than 40,000 systems reported stolen so far this year.

Games have been a hot holiday item for years, but data recently released by the FBI and reported on by USA Today suggests that "hot" could mean stolen as much as popular. Over the past three years, reported thefts of game hardware have nearly quadrupled, according to FBI statistics.

For 2009, the FBI National Crime Information Center has 42,615 reported thefts on file, up from 21,732 in 2008 and 11,074 in 2007. While crime is a year-round enterprise, the holiday season typically sees a spike in thefts, an FBI agent told the paper.

"Criminals are rational. They steal things that have high value, are easily transportable, and easily sold," University of Massachusetts-Lowell criminologist Larry J. Siegel told USA Today. "The most expensive thing in my house is my refrigerator, but nobody is trying to steal my refrigerator."

While game system thefts saw the largest jump of any category of electronics percentagewise, other high-end tech toys are still more popular targets for crooks. Laptop thefts have jumped from 96,834 in 2007 to 128,280 this year, while reports of stolen TVs surged from 27,176 to 78,227 over the same span. While some electronics theft is on the rise, overall property crime has actually decreased in recent years.
